MVK Poll Shows Support to NATO Entry at 50.7 % in November

BRATISLAVA, November 15, (SITA)-- In its 1,142-respondent opinion poll conducted between October 29 and November 5, the MVK polling agency claims that 71.5 percent of respondents support the country's entry into the European Union while 50.7 percent are for Slovakia's integration into NATO. Almost 21 percent of the respondents did not support Slovakia's entry into the European Union and 39.8 percent disagreed with Slovakia's integration into the alliance. In the poll, 7.8 percent could not answer the question related to the EU entry while 9.5 percent could not take stance on Slovakia's membership in NATO.
Support to Slovakia's membership in the European Union was strongest in January of this year when 81 percent of those polled upheld Slovakia's integration into the European Union and just 12.8 percent were against. On the other hand, June 1999 saw the lowest support to Slovakia's EU integration ambitions. That time only 62 percent of the polled supported the EU entry while 25.3 percent were against seeing Slovakia in the European Union.
Support to the NATO entry was strongest in March of this year when 61.7 percent of the Slovak citizens gave support to Slovakia's accession to the alliance and just 29.3 percent were against. The lowest number of respondents supported Slovakia's entry into NATO in June 1999 when just 33 percent wanted to see Slovakia in the alliance while 56 percent of respondents disagreed with NATO entry.
